Oklahoma Union Athletic Director Riley Duncan announces the hire of Bruce Munden as the new head football coach.
Munden spent last season as head coach at Cordell High School in New Cordell, Okla., and has 11 years of head coaching experience in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas.
Munden and his wife, Shelby, have four children: Mia, 22, Peyton, 20, Noah, 12, and Jordyn, 10.
"We are very excited to have Coach Munden and his family joining our Cougar Family," Duncan said. "We're thrilled to have his work ethic and detail oriented style brought to our football program. We believe he will bring great success to OKU for years to come. Go Cougars!"
Munden said OKU stood out as a coaching opportunity for a variety of reasons.
“When we thought about where to raise our children, OKU has always been a place where we could see them growing up,” Munden said. “I have applied multiple times for the opportunity to get in the district and finally we are getting the opportunity.
“OKU shows stability with the close knit community and small town feel.”
Munden’s Oklahoma coaching experience includes: Cordell - head football, powerlifting and boys track coach; Locust Grove - football defensive coordinator and head golf coach; Fairland - head football, powerlifting and boys track coach; and Barnsdall - head football, head junior high girls basketball, assistant baseball and assistant slow pitch coach.
A graduate of Sidell High School in Sidell, Texas, Munden has a master’s degree in educational leadership from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant; and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.
He is certified to teach elementary education, middle school math and intermediate math in Oklahoma; elementary grades 1 to 6, math grades 4 to 8, and core subjects grades 4 to 8 in Texas; and elementary education, math grades 5 to 8 and general math grades 7 to 12 in Kansas.
Munden takes over for Steven Trammell, who coached the OKU Football Cougars from 2018 to 2024.
"Coach Trammell has done a fantastic job laying a strong foundation here,” Duncan said. “We're happy to have landed Bruce Munden to continue to build this program.”
Munden was hired by OKU administrators during the March 12 OKU school board meeting.
