Welcome Shelby Munden, OKU FCCLA & FCA Instructor, Coach
Oklahoma Union Middle School Principal Levi Robbins announces the hire of Shelby Munden as the new Family and Career Science teacher.
Munden will teach FAC classes and lead the FCCLA program for both middle and high school students. She steps in following the retirement of long-time OKU teacher Berneta Haddox.
She will also serve as the assistant high school softball coach and assistant high school track coach.
“I am looking forward to using my knowledge and experiences to help guide the program, but also to learn from everything the students have learned in theirs as well,” Munden said. “OKU has always been a powerhouse in the FCCLA community, especially with a newly elected state officer.
“It just shows the hard work and dedication that has been present over the years. My hope is to continue the legacy built at OKU making it the best it can be.”
Munden, originally from Tulsa, comes to OKU after teaching in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. She has taught multiple subject areas and multiple grades - from first to 12th grade.
“I absolutely love to learn and I love a good challenge,” Munden said. “I think my love for learning and excitement to pursue it is infectious which has served me well in teaching in a variety of areas”
Most recently, Munden taught in western Oklahoma serving as the upper level science teacher, Edgenuity administrator and as the assistant junior high/high school softball and soccer coach.
Robbins said Munden brings multiple things to the table as she joins the OKU teaching staff.
“She brings years of teaching experience, excitement for the FACS curriculum, and a passion for developing young people into great humans,” Robbins said. “We are excited for Mrs. Munden and her family to join our Oklahoma Union family.”
Munden, also known as Mrs Munden, Coach Munden or Mrs. Coach Munden, is married to Bruce Munden, OKU’s new head football coach and math teacher. The couple has four children: Mia, 23, Peyton, 21, Noah, 12, and Jordyn, 10.
Munden has a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University, and recently completed a master’s ‘in educational administration from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
“Being from the area, OKU has always been in the picture,” Munden said. “We have friends who have taught there, while also having sat across the field as the opponent in many different sporting events over the years.
“OKU has always been somewhere where we could see ourselves, especially somewhere to raise our family. I love the small town with a big heart and OKU represents that for us.”
Munden said she’s excited to step into the role as FAC teacher and FCCLA adviser, adding opportunities like these help teach students not only content, but also how to be good humans and productive members of society.
“It is programs like FACS and FCCLA that create an opportunity to take the things that are learned in the four walls of a classroom a step further,” Munden said. “FCCLA is all about leadership, personal growth and applying real life skills locally, regionally, and nationally.”
She said the opportunity to work alongside students who recognize the importance of these types of programs is exciting.
“FACS (Family and Consumer Science) is based on the learning of consumer education, financial literacy, nutrition, wellness, relationships, housing, and textiles; or more simply put, life,” Munden said. “Each of the areas within FACS have real world applications that teach essential life skills. Cooking, money, sewing, health, etc. are just a few of the concepts taught within these classes and each are important to life beyond the classroom. It's one thing to know of these skills, but it's another to actively learn and apply these skills regularly. FACS classes prepare students for just that.”
Munden said she prides herself on being a lifelong learner, and she hopes that translates to her students, teaching them to never stop in the pursuit of growing and learning.
“Who would want to go into a classroom where the teacher just views it as a “job” and isn’t passionate about the content?” Munden asked. “Everything about FACS is something I use in my life and is something I am passionate about. I hope to create something that makes my students excited to learn and come to class everyday.”
Beyond teaching the curriculum, Munden said she loves being a wife, mother, teacher and coach.
“I am a diehard Oklahoma State fan, Go Pokes!,” Munden said. “When I am not at school or a ball field, you’ll normally find me curled up with a good book, and I also love to travel and be outside. My family and I are looking forward to moving to OKU in the next few weeks and could not be more excited to be Cougars!”
Munden was formally hired during the May 2025 OKU School Board meeting.
